Routines: Navigating the New Norm



Every day is a new day, and a new day full of opportunities right at your finger tips, ready to be won. In theory, it works very nicely, but if you do like your sleep (guilty as charged) it can be quite difficult to get the ball rolling. You've probably heard of millionaire routines and somehow it might put a couple more 0's into the bank account. It won't. It will probably set you up for a better mindset and overflow into the lifestyle. However mornings are the most important part of your day. It's when you have the most energy and it can dictate how the rest of the day will go. Whether you'll have the motivation to get through your 'to do' list and that little table you've been meaning to fix. Or whether you're spending it as a couch potato.


Getting out of bed first time

Sometimes it can be so easy to snooze your alarm, before falling back to bed. 'I'll rest for a couple minutes' or 'it's nice and warm under the covers' can sound so sweet in the moment, next thing you know it's 10am and you're tired for the day ahead. Jumping out of bed and pushing through the cold can galvanise that warrior spirit. You can face it, it won't kill you. And you'll be feeling better that you've accomplished the first thing of the day


No phone

The first thing to do is probably not to fill your mind with internet junk. The trap of staying in bed scrolling incessantly through social media and messaging is one that needs to be avoided. Making the choice of what you're going to take in first thing in the morning is empowering and is definitely going to have an impact on the way you think for the rest of the day.


Meditation

This is one that personally really helps me. Spending 5 minutes just breathing in and out, clearing my mind can work wonders. I like to spend a couple minutes just speaking to God, quieting my mind to focus. Clearing the clutter and inviting more room to be present.


Stretches and Cardio

Instead of staying warm, gently get the body moving. Even if it's just a quick run round the block, or a couple sets of push up. It puts you in a state of action, instead of reaction and waiting.


It starts the night before

Planning your day the night before can do a world of wonders. As you look at the day ahead, you know exactly what tasks need to be done, how much time you allocate to them and a plan in place to make sure you get the best out of your day. Suddenly, the 'to do' list doesn't seem so daunting and you have a better idea of what it's going to look like.


But this isn't about making a massive jump and trying to radically change everything. How many people make massive resolutions that just seem to fizzle out after the initial rigour. It's all about starting with incremental changes, that add up and are here to stay for the long term. It's all about finding what works for you, these are ones that I find helpful which I'm putting into action.
